Case study: Moray College UHI Staff Survey
Background
The Covid-19 pandemic had a significant impact on working, learning and teaching across the education sector. Moray College UHI was keen to understand the experiences of staff during lockdown and to plan how best to use the campus spaces and facilities when a return to them is permitted.
Purpose
The purpose of the project was to understand staff experiences during lockdown and identify their preferences for returning to work. With Moray Collage reviewing its Strategic Plan at the same time, there was also scope to ask staff for initial feedback on its current structure and future priorities.
The College was keen to use the survey results to inform future planning on a departmental and individual level where possible.
Methodology
An online survey was designed in partnership with the College, taking on board the feedback and suggestions the College had received from staff. It was distributed by the College and Scotinform provided regular updates on the number of completed responses in order to inform reminder emails and further communication.
Moray College was keen to use individual responses to inform future planning, but also recognised that confidentiality was very important when surveying staff. Scotinform addressed this by dividing the survey into different sections, asking for participant consent to share the information in each section, and only sharing the responses necessary to inform future planning.
Reporting took place at College and Departmental level, with each department receiving an aggregate report of the feedback from all relevant staff and, where they had consented, individual responses about future working preferences. Scotinform also provided a full report for the College overall, suitable for further distribution.
Impacts
Moray College has used the findings to inform future planning for its campus spaces and to start discussions about future working patterns with individual staff.
Nearly half of respondents consented to taking part in further consultation about Moray College’s Strategic Plan, and work is also underway to progress this.
“We found the expertise and guidance provided by Scotinform invaluable in undertaking this exercise. Scotinform were able to structure the survey so it met our objectives and protected confidentiality. We found Scotinform to be responsive, flexible and exceptionally professional in their approach”
Carolyn Thomson, Director of HR and OD, Moray College
